spittle selects no.1: ALLOW COOKIES
new segment alert!
*cough* *cough* spittle is pleased to introduce a new monthly feature - spittle selects!
Each month we will spotlight one of the most exciting upcoming exhibition openings in London in collaboration with a gallery/curator.
This July, we are partnering with Kupfer to promote the inaugural show in their new Shoreditch space: Allow Cookies.
The show makes the case that for a generation of emerging artists today, the ‘tension between manipulation and desire’ is a pivotal concern. As a newsletter that (sometimes oxymoronically) traverses the nuttiness of contemporary culture and the irresistible pull of contemporary consumption, this is a topic that fascinates us.
The press release explains: Allow Cookies seeks to illuminate how a subversive new generation of artists are dissecting the interplay and tension between the confusing, chaotic, but undoubtedly alluring signs and symbols that define our visual experience. Writing on the fluidity and constant production of culture under globalisation, Byung-Chul Han writes that ‘forgeries seamlessly combine with genuine articles, thus sublating fake and genuine into a third category of Being, into hyperreality.’ It is this uncanny slippage, and the inherent seductive possibilities it offers, that the artists in this exhibition seek to dissect. Often humorous, playfully opaque, or filled with longing, each artist’s work exhibits a wry self-awareness of the power dynamics of the current moment.
We hear that Dani Marcel is showing new works inspired by the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hongxi Li is showing a work that somehow involves both a shredder and a Rimowa suitcase, and Geo Stuart is showing a new installation that involves pareidolic imagery (?!) combined with AI generators…
Pipped to be the sceniest of the month’s show openings, we’ll see you there on Thursday 13 July from 6-9pm!
And finally, curators+PRs, if you’re listening, our August slot is up for grabs. What should we not miss?! send your case to spittle submissions [at] gmail [dot] com
