Schmurner Schmize
Murmurings surrounding the increasing irrelevance of the Turner Prize are rife in London’s gallery districts - and further afield for that matter! The prize, ‘awarded to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work in the preceding year’ is now more understood as a mid-career life achievement medal for artists on the radar of that particular year's judging panel (usually generously sprinkled with Tate and Tate-adjacent curators). The days of debauched, Becks-fuelled Turner prize giving ceremonies broadcast live on Channel 4 (is it even on TV these days?) are well over, replaced by professional events and a highly sanitised press conference. Last week, the announcement hit newsstands: Jesse Darling, Ghislaine Leung, Rory Pilgrim and Barbara Walker were announced as 2023’s four competitors for the big TP and we’re intrigued to see what they devise for this year’s show, located at Towner in Eastbourne.
Shockingly, no newsletter-creators were consulted in the selection, or any selection really for that matter. While all of the noms are amazing artists, we’re not 100% sold that they represent what we SEE and what we LOVE. So, in lieu of an exhibition review this week, we give you our alternative long list. Based on London shows only (we’ve been lazy little spittlers)…
Alex Margo Arden - Ginny on Frederick
Allison Katz - Camden Art Centre
Roxy Lee - Ridley Road Project Space
Every Ocean Hughes - Studio Voltaire
Mohammed Sami - Stuart Shave
Hannah Quinlan & Rosie Hastings - Tate
Daniel Sinsel - Sadie Coles
RIP Germain - V.O. Curations
Adham Faramawy - Serpentine Gallery at Stone Nest
Jenkin van Zyl - Rose Easton
What do ya think? Let us know if we’ve got it totally twisted??
