London Gallery Weekend – those immortal words – the words on everybody’s lips. If you weren’t out gallery hopping this weekend then what were you doing? We saw hundreds, if not thousands, of shows (jk) and have selected the crème de la crème for you to hurry along and see before the summer malaise hits and we all head to the French Riviera (read: Victoria Park) to forget about our sorry little underground basement dwelling front desk lives, for a little while at least x
Minh Lan Tran: Heat Generation via Harlesden High Street – go to the LGW performance programme to see what all the fuss is about and have a little sit down, stay for the raw physicality of performers fighting on stage and the Tyler Durden meets Diesel SS22 sweaty-oil-slick cyberpunk dystopia aesthetics.
PNI@10 at Project Native Informant – go for the promise of work by family faves Sophia Al-Maria, Juliana Huxtable and DIS, stay for some serious serves by the likes of Shanzhai Biennial (Head & Shoulders shampoo sequin dress), Dozie Kanu (car bench) and Kenneth Bergfeld (spacey oils) x
Narumi Nekpenekpen: where you fit in my palm at Soft Opening – go for the giant shiny red heart shaped plinths, stay for the gorgeously detailed and feverishly glazed ceramics, all cuteness & deep feeling.
Hamishi Farah: London, UK at Arcadia Missa – go for Beyonce, stay for ‘a letter from a London legal firm on behalf of their client seeking to colonise or reappropriate the physical body of Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli’.
Marcin Dudek: NEOPLAN at Edel Assanti – Go for the to-scale crashed tour bus, stay for the metal collages depicting the many-facets of football hooliganism.
Louis Blue Newby & Laila Majid: Beautiful Girls on Top! Via Xxijra Hii at The Shop – go for the unique, hand-decorated poster (free to take away!) stay for the jesmonite-cast sex cushion.
Maisie Cousins: Walking Back to Happiness at TJ Boulting – Go for the visceral food-body horror, stay for the Butlins-fever-dream AI holiday snaps.
Amanda Moström: itsanosofadog *It’s an arse of a dog at Rose Easton – Go for the puppy content, stay for the ‘overfamiliar’ family pics...

Frank is back with a brand new project!! But, before you get tooooo excited, it’s (yet again) not a musical project. Instead, the elusive artist has turned his hand to photography, releasing a new book titled ‘Mutations’ via his luxury label, Homer, featuring photographs taken from October to December of last year. The 48 page book, printed in the USofA on tissue-weight paper, is set to sell out fast so get moving! Priced at £76, this is more of an archival purchase / investment than your usual art mag – yet again I say be quick! Purchase here.

🏩 “It’s very definitely a house for a single woman” – With Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film release imminent, a plethora of pink-hued hot takes, plast-icky opinion pieces and girl-boss girl-power gate-keeping has descended on the internet. What hasn’t got much airtime, however, is Barbie’s full scale beloved Dream House. AD, thankfully, gives the house the rigorous architectural analysis it deserves.
🧜♀️ “At least the sculptor was conscious enough of female anatomy to include slightly protruding nipples” – Jeff Bezos’ recently unveiled $500 million super yacht features an interesting sculpture adorning its prow – a sexy, scantily clad woman/fish angel hybrid – hot! The question remains, is the figure modelled on his financée, Lauren Sánchez?
🙇 “I was dancing last night, and I just spent 20 minutes banging my head against this wall in the hotel room” – Blackhaine and Isamaya Ffrench interview each other for Office magazine, with an intro by spittle fave Louise Benson: read on for Marie Chouinard, Anna Demeulemeester and the Japanese art of butoh.
👠 “There was no zoom, you know, you had to go out” – Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garrioni of the beloved insta-cum-podcast Every Outfit interview Candace Bushnell, the OG Carrie Bradshaw. Candace, a journalist embedded in New York’s social scene in the 80s and beyond, spills all – from what it was really like at Studio 54 (Bianca Jagger’s white-horse moment was underwhelming), to how sex was better in the 80s (porn has a lot to answer for!!), and how her book was transformed into the groundbreaking series we know and love today.

We recently came across Maddox Gallery’s Guide To Collecting Young Artists, and we couldn’t help but laugh… While a lot of the advice given here has certainly come out of many a gallerist’s mouth, we felt Maddox weren’t quite so subtly towing the line between saying what their collectors wanted to hear, and holding back for fear of… being ridiculed on the internet !!! Some favourite quotes below, and remember, buy what you love and appreciate, as long as it appreciates in value!
“it is a known truth that every distinguished artist, at one point in time, was an unknown and emerging talent”
“it has never been more difficult as a collector to know just where to look for art”
“Never underestimate the power of social media… scrolling through your feed has never been so productive.”
“when acquiring a new artist for your collection, it is often beneficial to buy more than one artwork. This way you not only support the artist and boost their market, but if you were to sell the works on in the future, your collection would also be more valuable”
“If multiple works are not necessarily within your budget… there are still other ways that you can support new artists, including following their social media accounts or introducing their work to fellow collectors.”
“From the possibility of high financial returns to the satisfaction of watching their career grow, emerging artists are not only rewarding to collect, but are also considered the very lifeblood of the art market.”
Why not keep your own emerging artist as a pet today! It is SO fun to watch them grow. Go to Maddox Gallery .com to learn more x
