Exhibition of the Week
On Foot, curated by Jonathan Anderson, Offer Waterman, until 28 October, information here
It was only a matter of time before Jonathan (JW) Anderson curated another exhibition. His first show Disobedient Bodies at the Hepworth Wakefield looked at how both artists and fashion designers have reconsidered the human form, and was a celebration of three-dimensional aspects, fluid shapes and biomorphic forms. Including works by Sarah Lucas, Dorothea Tanning and Maria Bartuszová, there was also clothing by Comme Des Garcons and Issey Miyake that JW described as ‘challenging the DNA of the body’. The catalogue (now hard to find) was insanely good. Similarly, his new show at art dealer Offer Waterman’s space presents both art and fashion – a hot topic of late, as explored in the amazing recent issue of Frieze (especially a great article by Jeppe Ugelvig, taking ‘a look into the intersection of luxury, culture and marketing through brand-owned museums’.) JW’s show is titled On Foot, and it makes no claim for a specifically conceptual curatorial thread, instead, it seeks to celebrate London’s contrasting art – and vibes. The text notes that the curatorial perspective is cast from the ‘salubrious streets of Mayfair’ to the ‘provocatively storied alleys of Soho’ but what is realised is more a statement of impeccable taste and clout than anything else... A cute painting of a pigeon by Lucian Freud (from a private collection, perhaps Jonathan’s?) sits next to 3-D printed JW Anderson pigeon clutches painted by icon Anthea Hamilton. Masterfully meditative ceramics by Jennifer Lee lie upstairs from an intense painting by Florian Krewer. Hot names like Stanislava Kovalcikova and Doron Langberg are shown alongside canonised artists like Frank Auerbach and L.S. Lowry. There’s a lot of work, most of it pretty cool. JW, if you’re listening, we’re already drooling for exhibition 3.0 xo xo

😈 “Maybe I started out as a devil, but it's better to do that and end up an angel than the other way around, right?” – From stamp collector to ‘sith lord’, Stefan Simchowicz has had a slow and steady rise to art-world fame. Now, he gets the Daily Mail profile treatment, detailing that his collection has a whopping 25,000 works (over ⅓ of the size of Tate’s collection) and with dealer Tim Blum explaining that 'thinking about [Simcho] makes me sick to my stomach'. But the Daily Mail readership beg to differ, with Tracey from Boston kindly explaining ‘Umm thats how the art business works’. Got it.
👹 “I feel like I’m violating myself” – After a ten-year hiatus, Kimmy K returns to acting in the new season of American Horror Story. Naomi Fry’s verdict? Kardashian is ‘actually pretty good,’ resulting in a body-horror spectacle that plays on her fame with deft self-awareness. Will Kim follow in Lady Gaga’s footsteps, and use AHS as a gateway to Oscar-winning stardom? We can’t wait to find out!
🍋 “Influencing yourself is a real thing” – In this episode of Nymphet Alumni, the gals team up with Avery Trufelman (of Articles of Interest fame), to discuss Fashion Intellectualism. It’s the crossover episode of our dreams! On the agenda: Wedding fits; World Fairs; and the dangers of sunbathing after squeezing limes.

🌀 “Stoned was lively and focused… Drunk was sloppy” – The New York Times documents the third iteration of Drunk vs Stoned soccer match at The Ranch in upstate NY. It’s exactly like it sounds, a team of drunk artists plays a team of stoned artists. Chaos inevitably ensued - including TP-ing a Hyundai, rumours of bribery and Borna Samak collapsed in a field.
📚 “the artsy and the elite are hiring ‘book curators’” – From Bimbos to bibliophiles - how the tables have turned! Dalya Benyor explains that being smart is cool now, thank you very much. Social media has ensured that having an opinion is hot, and the more you document your intellectualism online, the better…
🎃 “Describing himself as a ‘sweet and musky kind of guy’” – Waxing lyrical about his inspirations (Tim Burton and German Expressionism) and discussing bonding with Elliot Page over Brian Eno, A$AP Rocky delves deep in this Dazed profile. Orientated around his upcoming campaign for Gucci Guilty, the rapper admits he’d rather be smelling his baby’s head than the cologne, and that he’ll ‘probably just put on some mask and chill out’ this Halloween. Love!
Add-to-Cart
A visit to the impeccable group show Link me at the Sound System ‘23 at Harlesden High Street – including works by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Savannah Marie Harris, and Paul Antony Smith, among others – introduced us to the incredible nail artist Jenny Daniela Canelo aka @canelonails_. With no arts background, gallery proprietor Jonny met her a few weeks back and immediately signed her up to the show. At the opening, she offered nails for a bargain price of around £25, and PJ Harvey even created exact replicas of her work on the fingers of his sculptures. Anyway, the pink set above ‘is giving Avril Lavigne 2007☠️💘’, as Canelo says, and we’ve scheduled an appointment for a Sk8r Boi set of our own – just in time for Frieze!
Parting Shot
We were torn this week between two appalling outcomes of late-stage capitalism that polluted our feeds: a brand promoting new ‘skid row’ inspired arm chairs and the ‘giant furball’ that got lost on the catwalk… no words.
